Computer Freezes, Uncertain Why....

Q

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Over the last few months, I've been having a problem with my computer freezing up; as in completely siezing, the only way to fix the problem being to shutdown manually. At first, I attributed it to some Java-related issue, as it always occured when I used the Limewire P2P program, which uses Sun Microsystems JRE. However, recently the computer also froze when I accessed one website's link page, and again when I was using the Ares P2P program. These instances lead me to believe that it may be some problem with my download settings, but I don't know specifically what the problem might be. My Internet connection is DSL through a wireless SMC router, accessed with a D-Link wireless adapter. On the same token, it may well have nothing to do with the connection, but merely some problem with my processor. It seems to freeze when I do too many things at once, such as use an IE browser while using Limewire. Does anyone have any suggestions?

P2P programs are notorious for Spyware/Adware and other BS, so I'd suggest following the steps in this post: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37074

OS is Windows XP Pro with SP2, and IE version is 6.0 (with some SP2 coding after that). As for the spy/adware, I run a pretty tight ship; there's nothing that I'm unaware of, and I keep my background programs to the bare essentials. Furthermore, the Limewire version I have is Pro, which guarantees no such software bundled in, and Ares is an indy program; the author didn't want/need spy/adware to fund it. A labour of love, one might say. The frustrating part about this problem is that it didn't happen before; only over the past few months has it steadily deteriorated to the point where even using Limewire is a serious gamble.

Computer occasionally freezes - Why?
Every so often when I have the desktop, am in a word processing program, or in my browser Mozilla, before the screen saver starts, the mouse cursor disappears and the computer freezes for no apparent reason. Anyone have any idea what causes this? I have to hold the power button until machine shuts down and then reboot. It is annoying! Does it have something to do with the mouse.

Check your event logs for a problem at the same time as this occurs. Possibly a corrupt screensaver, or the suspend feature of power options?

How do I check the event logs?

From the Run window: eventvwr.msc Then click each heading in the left side in turn and scroll the right side to find any errors and possible events that match your trouble occurrence.

Windows freezes:
I am restoring a copy of windows millenium edition to an hp pavilion. The problem is that after I run windows updates, the computer freezes at every chance it gets. It'll freeze when I try to open internet explorer, my computer, anything. And this is the second time this has happened on a computer that I've been working on. Last time, it happened on an older hp pavilion with windows me, and I just upgraded it to windows xp. But this time, the customer doesn't want to pay for xp. HELP!!!!

Check the capacitors on the motherboard - looking for any that look enlarged on the tops, leaking, exploded, or missing the caps with black ooze and cardboard strips all over.

X Windows freezes
here's what the problem is: Once I start X (windowmaker) my mouse doesn't appear to be working, by the way I do not have GPM running. Also when X starts up and the hints window comes up I can use Alt-F1 to navigate the menu and do whatever with the settings, but once I close all windows, so I'm at the desktop, it freezes up and I can't even do Alt-f1 or anything, I've tried running GPM, but that doesn't do anything, my main concern is that X is freezing once I close all the windows, and should be at the desktop. I'm pretty new to linux but if you could give me any help it is appreciated, thanks

You can try Control-Alt-Fx to access another virtual terminal to get out of X. At least on my system. This will also see if the system is completely frozen up. From there you can examine the system: top / ps -e. Control-Alt-Backspace should shut off X from the X.

I'm having trouble with the file type window under View-Options-File Type. None of its functions work (scroll bar, buttons) and it freezes (I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del). Also the scroll bar in the Open-With window freezes for probably the same reason. I checked for viruses and my disk is clean. Does anyone know what could possibly wrong?

Sounds easy, Go to Microsoft Homepage and get the Service Pack1 and the kernel32.exe update. Install the servic epack first, then install the update.
