ATI Launches PCI Express Chipsets for Athlon 64, Sempron Desktops
November 9, 2004
Integrated DirectX 9 or Discrete Graphics
As a change from battling with Nvidia for graphics processor sales, ATI Technologies Inc. has decided to battle with its archrival for AMD64 motherboard chipset sales, introducing both integrated- and external-graphics PCI Express platforms for Socket 754 and 939 Athlon 64 and Sempron desktop systems.
The Radeon Xpress 200 features DirectX 9 (Vertex and Pixel Shader 2.0) graphics based on ATI's Radeon X300 core technology, supporting high-quality antialiasing and 32-bit color resolutions up to 2,536 by 2,536; it uses what ATI calls HyperMemory technology to share up to 128MB of system memory. The Radeon Xpress 200P relies on a PCI Express x16 interface for high-performance add-in graphics.
Both chipsets support HyperTransport speeds up to 1GHz with additional overclocking flexibility, as well as four PCI Express x1 and up to seven PCI slots; four Serial ATA ports with RAID 0 and 1 support; eight USB 2.0 ports; and rich multimedia with high-definition audio and DVI and VGA outputs for multimonitor support plus ATI's LCD Enhancement Engine for faster LCD response time. End-to-end PCI Express connectivity allows for simplified integration of third-party Southbridge components for specialized solutions. ATI says partners including Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Soyo, FIC, Shuttle, Falcon Northwest, and HP have adopted the Radeon Xpress platform.
