ATI Announces Ultra-High-End Radeon X850, Mid-Priced X800 Graphics Cards
December 1, 2004
New PCI Express Cards Coming Soon
ATI Technologies Inc. has raised the ceiling on its line of PCI Express graphics solutions for high-performance gamers. Scheduled to begin shipping immediately, the new Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition card ($550 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory) takes the company's 16-pixel-pipeline, 6-vertex-engine architecture to new heights with engine and memory speeds of 540MHz and 590MHz (effective 1.18GHz) respectively. ATI's supreme gaming card is a two-slots-wide design with industrial-strength onboard cooling system.
ATI has also announced slightly tamer Radeon X850 XT and Radeon X850 Pro cards, to sell at slightly lower prices; all three of the X850 series will feature a 256-bit interface to 256MB of memory. For more mainstream professionals and casual gamers, the company will take advantage of its latest 0.11-micron-process engineering to introduce Radeon X800 XL and Radeon X800 cards that drive X800-series features and capabilities to new low price points (think $350 with 256MB and $250 with 128MB of memory respectively).
ATI says the full family of Radeon X850 and X800 products will be available by year-end, both under its own brand and in cards from partners including Abit, ASUSTeK, Diamond, Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire, and VisionTek.
