Targus USB Hub Helps Notebooks Chill Out
October 22, 2004
USB or AC Power
High-performance notebooks, especially desktop-replacement models with desktop
processors, can run hot -- hot enough to shorten the life of internal components
or even damage desk or table finishes, let alone being uncomfortable for lap use.
Targus Inc.'s new Notebook ChillHub ($50) combines a four-port USB 2.0 hub with twin
cooling fans in a 9 by 11.8 by 0.8-inch pad or base that silently draws heat from
the computer and prevents the CPU from overheating during use, eliminating the need
for the notebook to activate its louder and power-consuming internal fans.
The 18-ounce ChillHub can be powered by one of the computer's USB ports or
by an included AC adapter; the latter conserves notebook power but can be
left behind when traveling. An on/off switch allows the fans to be turned
off manually when desired. The USB 2.0 hub lets users attach multiple devices
such as a mouse, keyboard, or external drive, with overcurrent protection on
all four ports that shuts down only the affected port if a peripheral requires
more power than the hub can supply.
